Hazardous Activities
Below is a list of the more common Hazardous Activities.
This list is by no means exhaustive.
If you are in any doubt as to whether an activity is considered hazardous or not, please refer the activity immediately to BJK for confirmation of cover

IMPORTANT NOTE
Casual playing of Football, Cricket, Rugby, American Football or Roller Hockey, other than in organised regular teams, is covered at the basic rates for Public Liability and Personal Accident.
For teams registered to a league, cover is restricted to those that cater for players aged 16 years and under.
Public Liability
- In respect of Public Liability insurance Hazardous Activities are included at an additional premium if undertaken at own club/group.
- No extra charge will be made if the activity is undertaken at an Accredited Centre that has Public Liability insurance currently in force that indemnifies users of the centre
- Cover is subject to the Hazardous Activities being disclosed on the particular clubs Proposal Form or Statement of Fact and insurers being satisfied with the guidelines stipulated by the club as to how the activity is to be conducted.
- If the Hazardous Activity is not disclosed to and agreed by insurers cover will not be operative.
- For those Hazardous Activities which are added to the clubs activity programme part way through the year, please ensure that a Hazardous Activities form (Hazardous Activities Form) is completed and returned to BJK Insurance Brokers as least 7 days prior to the commencement of the activity.
Personal Accident
- Hazardous Activities are excluded from the basic cover provided by the Personal Accident section.
- Certain Hazardous Activities may be included subject to the clubs activity programme part way through the year, please ensure that a Hazardous Activities form is completed and returned to BJK Insurance Brokers at least 7 days prior to the commencement of the activity.
SKATEBOARDING is only covered as part of clubs activities and subject to strict adherence of the following guidelines.
- Sessions are supervised by leaders at all times
- NO access to ramps by members without supervision
- Ramps need to be made to proper specifications and maintained by experienced personnel on a regular basis.
- Only one person should use the ramp at a time.
- Members should wear personal protective equipment whilst skating, namely, helmets, kneepads, elbow pads and/or wrist guards.
- If the area used for skate boarding is owned by, or responsibility of the club, it must not be used for skating by members of the public.(Your insurance does not cover your liability to the general public).
- If the area used for skateboarding is not owned by the club, permission(preferably written) ,must be obtained from the landlord and confirmation that Property Owners Liability is currently in force and insurers are aware of the area’s use.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
- It is a condition precedent to your insurers liability that the appropriate PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT is worn at all times whilst participating in any Hazardous Activity.
- For example, the following personal protective equipment must be worn whilst club members are participating in skateboarding, skating, scooters, BMX biking, Quad biking, motor cycle projects, go-karting, roller blading and roller hockey as part of a clubs activities. Helmets, kneepads, elbow pads and/or wrist guards.
- For motor cycle projects, boots must be worn whilst participating in an activity, please refer to the official governing national bodies.
- All measures should be taken by club leaders, helpers and volunteers to ensure that this condition is adhered to.
Accredited Centres
- For those Hazardous Activities which are conducted at an Accredited Centre, written confirmation should be obtained from the Centre by the club stating that all members, leaders and helpers participating in the activity are covered under the Centres insurance policy PRIOR to the clubs visit.
- Under no circumstances should a disclaimer be signed waiving any rights that you have in claiming for damages for accidental bodily injury or damage to property as a result of a negligent act on the Centres behalf.
Instructors
- It is essential that all club instructors leading Hazardous Activities are qualified by either certificate or experience in instructing the particular activity undertaken
- Such details should be disclosed to insurers at least 7 days prior to the date of the activity for their approval if not already done so.
- Instructors who are employed on a sessional basis only are covered under the clubs insurance policy, subject to the instructor having the appropriate qualifications or experience to lead the activity.
- For clubs who hire an instructor to lead a Hazardous Activity, it is essential that they request a copy of the instructors own insurance cover.
- The cover should state that the instructor is insured to lead the said activity and that all participants are covered for personal injury or damage to their property as a result of a negligent act on the part of the instructor.
- Third Party Instructors who do not have insurance should not be hired to lead a Hazardous Activity.
Excluded Activities
Ballooning, Bungee Jumping, Counselling, Equestrian Sports, Football or Rugby played in a league in isolation of other sports for players aged 17 years and over, Hang Gliding, Parachuting, Paragliding, Parascending, Racing (other than on foot), Shooting,Sky Diving, any activity involving Aviation or any Ariel Sport.
Definition of Accredited Centre
An establishment which holds Public Liability insurance currently in force that provides cover for users of the centre and is approved by any of the following organisations.
- Central Council of Physical Recreation(CCPR)
- UK Sport
- Sport England
- Sport Scotland
- The Sports Council for Wales
- The Sports Council for Northern Ireland
Or any organisation which affiliates to any of the above.
Definition of Qualified Instructor
Qualified instructors, whether from an Accredited Centre or from the Youth Club will lead the Hazardous Activity in accordance with the policies, principles, practices and procedures published by the National Governing Body and who has completed a valid coaching qualification in the sport or activity being undertaken with a body approved by one of the following organisations
- Central Council of Physical Recreation (CCPR)
- UK Sport
- Sport England
- Sport Scotland
- The Sports Council for Wales
- The Sports Council for Northern Ireland
- National Coaching Foundation
- Sports Coach UK
Risk Management Policies
